Diana Princess of Wales Memorial Fund - The Work Continues

Grants

Under our Strategic Plan 2007 to 2012, the Fund's grant-making activities are grouped under three initiatives, each of which has a desired outcome and a set of strategic objectives to be achieved during this five year period. The three initiatives are:

  • The Palliative Care Initiative, under which the Fund is committed to spending up to £10 million over five years to promote the scale-up of palliative care in Malawi, Kenya, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe, and its integration into their governments' health policies.
  • The Refugee and Asylum Seekers Initiative, under which the Fund is committed to spending up to £10 million over five years to raise awareness and highlight the needs and issues of young refugees and people seeking asylum.
  • The Partnership Initiative, under which the Fund is committed to spending up to £5 million over five years to follow-up and add leverage to our previous investments, including in penal affairs in the UK, and internationally in our programme on eradicating explosive remnants of war.

How we make our grants: Proactive grant-making

Grant-making under our three initiatives is primarily proactive in nature. Grants are provided on an ‘invitation-to-bid' basis or through negotiated partnerships with selected organisations that have the capacity to deliver the initiatives' desired outcomes. Projects will be rigorously assessed against the initiatives' strategic objectives, and to maximise impact grants are awarded for up to five years with a mid-term review. Please note that applications for grants are by invitation only.

Other requests for funding

As the Fund is engaged in pro-active grant-making, providing grants on ‘invitation to bid' basis, the Fund is unable to accept general requests for funding from either organisations or individuals. The demand for funds is always greater than the money available, and the Fund is of the belief that we can help more people by distributing grants to organisations that have the capacity to deliver the desired outcomes of our three initiatives.

Current and past grants

The Fund is committed to sharing information about how we have continued the humanitarian work of Diana, Princes of Wales.

In the first nine years of existence, the Fund spent over £70 million on grants and other direct charitable expenditures. More than 350 organisations around the world received grants. Charities with which the Princess had a close connection in her lifetime were invited to submit proposals for funding, and more than 90 such organisations received money from the Fund in our first year.

Since our inception, the Fund has worked in the spirit of the Princess' humanitarian work by focusing on disadvantaged and marginalised people, providing them with support, a voice and an opportunity to realise their full potential.
